I never would've read this book had it not been assigned to me in a Spanish literature course, but I'm so glad that I did read it, not only because it's a great novel, but because it complicates some novels and authors that I really love. A class assignment I'm grateful for, as I might never have encountered this book otherwise, and it may now be one of my favorites. خولیو نویسنده ای تبعیدی که مدتی را هم در زندان سپری کرده است، برای نوشتن کتابی درباره دوران زندانش، به همراه همسرش به آپارتمان دوستش در مادرید می رود. راوی کتاب به غیر از فصل آخر خود اوست که در حین بیان تلاشهای بی فرجامش در نویسندگی، درگیری با مشکلاتی چون بی پولی و افسردگی و... را هم روایت می کند.
اما با تغییر راوی در فصل آخر داستان با پایانی متفاوت و غافلگیرکننده تمام می شود.

Un libro que lentamente logré terminar. Algunos pasajes lo hacían interesante, pero se trata básicamente de sumergirse en la agónica miseria de aquellos que no están dispuestos a asumir sus fracasos. Con este libro llegué a la conclusión de que aquello que está bien escrito puede perfectamente carecer de alma.

Una novela muy entretenida. Destaco que el fracaso como asunto principal se presente en todas las dimensiones del argumento y sus personajes. Me parece súper atinado, además, que el objetivo sea el humor y no la empatía. El protagonista es desagradable y patético, así que el interés de por su historia se fundamenta en el morbo de verlo equivocarse. Not nearly as dull as I found it the first time around, so long ago -- It turned me off from reading anything else by Donoso. I must have been going through some sort of phase then, because this time I found it thoroughly engaging and moving. The characters are infuriatingly flawed, but Donoso still manages to make them sympathetic, and you find yourself quietly rooting for them to find a place in the world. It's a great novel, I only wish I had noticed this the first time around.

Podría ser un libro estupendo, pero le restan valor sus abundantes peroratas políticas y las referencias obsesivas al país de origen. Aun así, es muy interesante el aspecto intimista de esta novela, cuyo tema central no es el fracaso en sí, sino el resentimiento que supuestamente genera en los personajes principales, envilecidos por su pedante discurso político, en contraposición con la aparente felicidad de aquellos que permanecen libres de tales ataduras ideológicas.

روايت زندگي نويسنده اي شيليايي در غربت است كه سال هاي بعد از كودتاي شيلي را سپري ميكند. نوميدي شخصيت اول داستان، جنس دغدغه ها و تفكرات شباهت هايي با فضاي ايران بعد از حوادث سال هشتاد و هشت داشت. حين خواندن كتاب چندين مرتبه از مشاهده شباهت ها تعجب كردم و به فكر فرو رفتم.
